Canada’s Build Clean Now workshop concentrated specifically on the aviation sector, asking how we can move Canada’s pipeline of 17 sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) projects – worth more than CAD 15bn in investment potential – from ambition to reality. The single-sector focus of this workshop enabled a deeper conversation on well-known key barriers, such as policy durability, revenue certainty and first-of-a-kind project and technology risk.

There is a strong case for domestic SAF production, with Canada relying on imports for about a third of its jet fuel needs and no clear signs of domestic fossil fuel refining capacity increasing.
The country’s large canola oil sector offers a clear near-term opportunity to produce SAF, as about a third of its production already goes towards biofuel, mostly biodiesel production in the US (which it then ships back over the border).
Going beyond canola, Canada could harness its abundant forest residues as a lower-cost feedstock for biomass-to-liquid technologies and open up a path to significantly more competitive SAF supply in the future.
With multiple Canadian SAF projects getting very close to final investment decision, targeted action could bring the first investments over the line in the very near future.
